Daniel embarked on his journey in the mining industry through an apprenticeship with Macmahon Contractors, where he received invaluable training and mentorship from seasoned tradespeople and a nurturing management team. Immersed in component rebuilds, machine overhauls, field service, and on-site experiences, his apprenticeship equipped him with the arsenal to thrive in the trade.
Upon completing his apprenticeship, Daniel accumulated pertinent post-trade experience, fueled by an unwavering ambition to establish his own venture. Meanwhile, Jess pursued her passion for aiding others, earning a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Rehabilitation from UWA, subsequently becoming an exercise physiologist. Her career spanned roles in hospital and private practice settings in Perth, where she provided rehabilitation services to diverse clientele.
In June 2007, Daniel and Jess embarked on their entrepreneurial journey by founding EMS (Earthmoving Maintenance Solutions), with BTP (Best Tractor Parts) in Hazelmere as their inaugural client. A year into the venture, Daniel’s longing for the red dirt led the couple to relocate to Port Hedland, marking a pivotal moment in their enterprise’s trajectory.
Daniel undertook extensive field service work across the Pilbara and Kimberley regions, while Jess delved into injury management and workers’ compensation rehabilitation.
As EMS flourished, Jess assumed a permanent role within the business as office manager, overseeing HR, accounts, and ensuring operational seamlessness. Her initiative in implementing a comprehensive OHSE management system proved instrumental in securing contracts, including the significant BHP Port Hedland maintenance contract in 2009.
From 2009 EMS evolved from a modest team of five to a formidable force of thirty by the end of the year, catering not only to owner-operators but also to major mining corporations. Relocating to a larger industrial yard on Bell Street marked a pivotal juncture, signaling exponential expansion and necessitating a rebrand to Finmec, emblematic of their diversified service portfolio.
Under the Finmec banner, the business broadened its horizons, extending services beyond mechanical and electrical repairs to encompass a dry hire arm, supplying top-tier equipment to the mining, civil, and rail sectors. Today, grounded in principles of integrity, community stewardship, and unparalleled customer service, Finmec boasts a workforce of over ninety and a fleet of more than a hundred hire equipment pieces, cementing its status as a stalwart presence in the Pilbara region.
